Benin: about the flag

Benin's flag is a message of geography: green for the south, yellow and red for the north, forests at one end, savanna and the sun at the other. The vertical green band gives way to horizontal stripes of gold and red.

Adopted in 1959 while the country was still the French colony of Dahomey, it became one of the first African flags in the pan-African colors of red, yellow and green. The Marxist regime that took power in 1975 swept it away for a plain green flag with a red star.

When one-party rule collapsed in 1990, the old flag returned untouched. It had waited out fifteen years of exile, and today it flies unchanged over Porto-Novo and Cotonou.
