Belarus: about the flag
Belarus' flag carries an ornament you could frame: a vertical strip of red-on-white pattern along the hoist, woven like the rushnyk towels Belarusians have used at weddings and harvests for centuries. The rest is simply red over green.
The design descends from the flag Soviet Belarus adopted in 1951, minus the hammer and sickle. When a 1995 referendum restored this pattern in place of the white-red-white flag of 1991, the vote was bitterly contested, and the old banner became a symbol of the opposition; both still appear at rallies.
Red recalls the flag's defenders, green the forests and fields that cover the country. The ornament's diamond shapes are traditional weaving motifs, fixed by law in 2012.
