Bangladesh: about the flag

The red disc on Bangladesh's green field began with a map inside it. When student activists first raised the flag at Dhaka University on 2 March 1971, the circle of red held a yellow silhouette of the region fighting to be born as Bangladesh.

The artist Quamrul Hassan is credited with the design, and the colors spoke plainly: green for the lush delta and for Islam, red for the rising sun of independence and the blood being shed in the war that began weeks later. The map proved impossible to reproduce neatly on both sides of the cloth, so it disappeared.

The simplified flag was confirmed on 17 January 1972, just after victory. The original, map and all, is preserved as a relic of the independence struggle, and every 26 March, the anniversary of the declaration, the red disc flies over a transformed country.
