Bahamas: about the flag
The Bahamas' flag is built from the sea itself: two bands of aquamarine for the water around the islands, a band of gold for the sun and the sand, and a black triangle at the hoist, one of the boldest shapes on any flag.
The black stands for the strength and unity of the Bahamian people, whose ancestors came from Africa, and the triangle points toward the future. The design was chosen from hundreds of entries in a national competition as independence approached in the early 1970s.
It was first hoisted on 10 July 1973, the day the Bahamas left British rule, and 10 July remains the flag's birthday. The colors show up everywhere, from the airport welcome signs to the banknotes, and on independence morning they fly over the Junkanoo practice grounds.
