Azerbaijan: about the flag

Azerbaijan's flag was born in the hurry of state-building: when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared independence in 1918, it adopted its banner on 9 November of that year, one of the very first national flags of a Muslim-majority democracy.

Blue, red and green horizontal stripes carry a white crescent and an eight-pointed star. Blue stands for the Turkic heritage of the people, red for progress and the modern age, green for Islam; the crescent is an old symbol of the faith, and the star's eight points reach back to traditional designs.

The Soviet era replaced it with red flags of its own, but in 1991 the republic brought the 1918 banner back. Since 2009, 9 November has been celebrated as National Flag Day, one of the biggest dates of the year.
