Australia: about the flag
The Australian flag flew for the first time on 3 September 1901, the result of a worldwide competition held after the colonies federated. More than 32,000 designs were submitted.
The flag combines three elements on a blue field. The Union Jack in the canton reflects the country's British heritage. Below it, the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star represents the six states and the territories. The Southern Cross, a constellation visible in the southern sky, appears on the fly. The stars were simplified in 1903, and the Commonwealth Star gained its seventh point in 1908.
The flag was formally proclaimed as the national flag in 1953, though it had been in use since 1901. Australians celebrate Australian National Flag Day on 3 September.
