Aruba: about the flag
Aruba's flag holds a small geography lesson. Light blue fills the field for the sea and sky, two narrow yellow stripes speak of the island and its wealth, and in the upper corner sits a red star with a white edge: red for the love of the island, white for purity, and the star's four points reaching toward the four corners of the world.
The flag was taken into use on 18 March 1976, ten years before the island separated from the Netherlands Antilles as a country in its own right within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Since then, 18 March has been Aruba's Flag Day, celebrated with the national anthem and ceremonies from the schools to the waterfront. The colors have soaked into island life, appearing on license plates, beach towels and the national football team's shirts.
