Armenia: about the flag

Red, blue and orange fly over Armenia today exactly as they flew over the short-lived first republic a century earlier. That republic lasted barely two years, but its colors outlasted the Soviet Union by seven decades.

The tricolor was adopted on 24 August 1990, as the republic was breaking away from Moscow, legally before the Soviet collapse. Red stands for the blood Armenia has shed, blue for the sky, and orange for the courage and toil of the people, some say also for the wheat fields of the Ararat plain.

Today the tricolor appears at every public building, and it flies every 24 April, when Armenians remember the victims of the 1915 genocide: a quiet banner of survival on the country's saddest day.
