Antigua & Barbuda: about the flag

The flag of Antigua and Barbuda was designed by an artist, not by a committee of politicians. Reginald Samuel, a painter and sculptor, entered a public competition in 1966 and won it, beating hundreds of other designs for the approaching nationhood.

His inverted triangle stands for a V, victory, and below it rises the sun of a new nation coming up out of the sea. Black at the top stands for the African ancestry of the people, then blue for the Caribbean and white for the sand of the beaches, with green at the base for the land.

The flag was first raised on 27 February 1967, when Antigua became a self-governing state, and it kept its place through full independence in 1981. Samuel's design proved so right that nobody has wanted to change it since.
