Angola: about the flag

Angola's flag was born as a battle flag: the red and black with the yellow emblem was the flag of the MPLA, the movement that fought Portugal's colonial army, and it became the national flag on independence day.

Red stands for the blood shed in the liberation struggle, black for the African continent. At the center, a yellow half-gear stands for industry and workers, a machete for peasants and the fight for freedom, and a star for progress, deliberately recalling the revolutionary imagery of the 1970s.

It was hoisted on 11 November 1975, the day Portugal handed over power. Angola has kept it through civil war, sweeping constitutional change and peace, and it remains one of the most recognizable flags in Africa, largely unchanged since that first morning.
