Andorra: about the flag

One country, two princes: Andorra is governed jointly by the Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the serving president of France, and its flag squeezes their worlds together, a tricolor like France's and Spain's, charged with ancient arms.

Blue, yellow and red echo the two neighboring flags, while the quartered shield compresses centuries of Pyrenean history: the arms of Urgell, Foix, Bearn and Catalonia. On the scroll beneath runs the motto Virtus Unita Fortior, Latin for united virtue is stronger.

The tricolor was adopted in 1866, and the arms were redrawn in their present form in 1993, the year Andorra adopted its constitution. The strange shape of the state explains the strange shape of the flag: half a millennium of shared sovereignty.
