American Samoa: about the flag
Most American territory flags rework the Stars and Stripes. American Samoa went another way: a blue field carrying the bald eagle of the United States, but holding Samoan symbols in its talons, a fly whisk and a war club, the emblems of Samoan chiefly authority.
The eagle grips a fue, the whisk of woven fibers carried by talking chiefs, and an uatogi, the war club of the old chiefs. The design came out of the late-1950s effort to give the American territories flags of their own, prepared with the help of the Army's heraldic office.
The flag was adopted on 27 April 1960. American Samoa marks Flag Day every 17 April, the anniversary of the 1900 deed of cession, when the banner is raised beside traditional chiefly ceremonies, the two symbol systems the flag itself joined.
