Algeria: about the flag

The green-and-white flag with a red crescent and star flew for years before Algeria existed as a state: it was the banner of the National Liberation Front during the eight-year war against France. When independence came on 5 July 1962, the fighting flag simply became the national one.

Green and white divide the field: green for Islam and the faith of the country, white for purity and peace. The red crescent and star are old symbols of the Islamic world, and red recalls the blood shed in the struggle. The design's roots reach back to the green-and-white banner said to have been carried in the 1830s by Emir Abdelkader in his own war against the French.

The flag was confirmed by law after the 1962 referendum, and 5 July remains the national day. It flies over government buildings, football stadiums and consulates from Algiers to Paris.
