Albania: about the flag

The double-headed black eagle on Albania's red field may be the oldest national emblem in Europe still in use. It belonged to Gjergj Kastrioti, called Skanderbeg, the fifteenth-century lord who led resistance against the Ottoman Empire from his fortress at Kruje, and whose banner is said to have carried a black eagle on red.

For centuries the eagle drifted through chronicles and armorials. When Albania declared independence on 28 November 1912, the red flag with the black double-headed eagle rose over the new state, and the independence anniversary is still the flag's great day.

The country kept the eagle through monarchy, occupation and a long communist isolation: even when almost everything else about Albania changed, the flag did not. It flies today much as it did in 1912.
