Åland Islands: about the flag
Aland's flag quietly tells you whose islands these are and whose heart they beat with: a blue field with a yellow cross edged in red, Sweden's colors wrapped around Finland's. The islands are part of Finland but speak Swedish, and the flag lands neatly in between.
In the early years of the twentieth century, as Alanders debated their own banner, designs borrowed heavily from Sweden, which lies only about 40 kilometers away. In the 1950s the compromise flag took its final form, mixing the Swedish blue-and-yellow with the red of Finland's cross, and the islands received it in 1954.
Today the flag flies beside Finland's on public buildings, and islanders treat it as the badge of the home-rule autonomy granted in 1921 by the League of Nations, one of the League's first successful settlements.
